Description
Toots, Hibbert moved to Kingston in 1962 and joined the singers Jerry Mathius and Raleigh Gordon to form the Maytals.
The group cut a series of hits with Clemenet `Coxsone' Dodd at Studio One, including their debut `Fever,' alongside the favoured `Six and Seven Books of Moses.'
In 1966, the Maytals won the first Jamaican Song Contest with `Bam Bam,' the group also won the competition in 1969 and 1972. In our clip we see rare footage of Toots alongside Henry "Raleigh" Gordon and Nathaniel "Jerry" Matthias performing their first crossover hit, `Monkey Man'. The song peaked at No. 47 in April 1970. Nine years later the Specials scored a hit with the song which subsequently inspired Amy Winehouse to cover the song. Bizarrely the BBC banned it due to racist overtones, whereas in Jamaica a monkey man is basically a term for an ugly person.
He returned to the competition in 2020 as a runner up and shortly after he was said to have contracted Covid 19.
Sadly on 11 September Covid 19 claimed another victim and Jamaica and the world lost one of its legendary reggae ambassadors.
