"Bringing It All Back Home," widely considered among Dylan's best records, or at least among the three that encompass his strongest period of songwriting—do I consider it his best? I'm not sure. The first that I heard of this song was as a Freshman in college, among the first days, in fact, when the kid who lived across the hall from me left me a mix CD while I was sleeping off a night of idiocy. "Bob's Dylan Mix," he called it. That kid was Brendan Cavanagh, a sort of Neal Cassady character, and one of my best friends. The version of this tune that he included was a live cut from one of the Bootleg Series. That just goes to show that there is no definitive Dylan. I guess this is a roundabout way to answer my own question, but no, "Bringing It All Back Home" is not Dylan's greatest work, if only because Dylan is nothing without the complete story. You can watch the Battle of Helms deep and say you understand Tolkien, but you don't. The same goes for Dylan.
