As most of the regular visitors to my youtube channel will recognise, female vocalists dominate my musical tastes over the years, but a few rare male artists have snuck in, Gino Vannelli one of the few. I liked his big dramatic voice the very first time i heard it in early 1979, when 'I just wanna stop' bubbled under in Australia on the Top 40 charts.

In late 1978 Gino released his career changing record 'Brother to brother' and the single 'I just wanna stop'. It was a #1 in his native Canada and a #4 pop hit in America. In Australia, the song entered the Top 100 in December and rose to #59, but i was hooked, and was even more enamored with this sublime singer when the 'Nightwalker' LP spawned the unforgettable 'Living Inside myself' two and a half years later.

I have searched high and low for Gino's music over the years, including his forays into electronic pop, jazz, live recordings and reworkings of his earlier catalogue. He is best known downunder for the 1987 hit 'Wild Horses', but for me this 1978/79 power ballad and the even more emotive 'Living Inside myself' typify the intensity and magic that Mr Vannelli engenders every time he sets foot inside a recording studio.
