"Step into Christmas" was originally released as a single in November, 1973. It reached #1 in the USA on the Billboard Christmas chart and peaked at #23 in the UK pop chart.
The song is included as a bonus track on the 1995 remastered reissue of the "Caribou" compact disc and on the 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe version of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" released in 2014, as well as on other Elton John compilation albums. It is also included on several Christmas compilation albums by various artists.
"Step Into Christmas" and its B-side, "Ho, Ho, Ho (Who'd Be A Turkey At Christmas)" were recorded during a hasty session at Trident Studio in London, and, according to Taupin, was engineered to imitate Phil Spector's trademark "wall of sound" technique.
"I really like 'Step Into Christmas' because it sounds like something off a Phil Spector album. It's very echoey, and it's got a lot going on—it's a real fun record. I guess it's that thing that everybody wants to make a Christmas record at some time—it does have a great Christmas feel to it! As soon as it begins, you can almost feel the snow falling."
(liner notes by John Tobler from "Caribou," 1995)
