From Steve Perry - "The way I approached the lyric was to use a symbolic web of associations, the very precise meaning of which should compound and finally hover above the whole like a hologram. This technique, that I sometimes employ, was influenced by my career long interest in French symbolist poet Stephen Mallarme. When making the video Patrick used a few of the images as prompts to attempt to radiate a similar, but not exact, sense of my lyrical intent. He used the images of distance, of observing from a far off great height. He depicted the narrator's mad scientist lab. He used the magnifying glass. He evoked a “Manchurian Candidate” 50’s cold war/ sci fi thing in there which I think helps create a “distancing effect”- a Brechtian theater technique that I am all about. I also think the uncanny valley of the AI adds to this alienation effect. It all adds up to something that hopefully comes across as a little Godard/Bunuel pop song nugget, but it's probably not for everybody.”
