This is a folk song from Shandong's Chengwu County about the Yihetuan (Boxer) Rebellion, from a series on Shandong folk songs.

Note: The remark about "chests bare" means that in battle, the men would take off or unbutton their shirts, so as to strike fear into the hearts of their enemies and show their fearlessness. Needless to say, this did not apply to the female warriors.
